What a fixing wax is for

A wax does one job: it holds hair where you put it. It will not lift a downward-growing hair or change its structure, and it is not a shortcut past a lamination. What it does is make the shape you combed survive a client's day — the brushed-up arch that looks laminated in a photograph, on a client who is not booked for one. That is also why the strong formula matters: a soft hold looks the same at nine in the morning and gone by lunch.

How to use it

• Work on clean, dry brows. Any oil left on the skin is what makes wax slide.
• Pick up a small amount with a spoolie or a brow brush — less than you think.
• Comb from the base of the hair towards the tip, shaping as you go.
• Leave it a minute to set before you touch it again, then pencil or powder on top.

What is in it

• Vitamin B5 (panthenol) — the reason a daily fixative does not leave hair brittle.
• Vitamin E (tocopherol) — conditions the hair while the wax holds it.
• A quick-drying base — glycerin and sorbitol rather than a hard resin, so the finish stays flexible instead of flaking off the arch.

Before you use it on a client

ZOLA flags this and it is worth repeating: skin around the brow can react, especially where it is sensitive or already compromised. Skip it while a client is on retinoids, mid-course of active acids, or fresh from an intensive peel, and patch test before the first use. If the brow area needs prepping first, that is what the exfoliating peeling cream is for.

15 g tin, 36 months from manufacture, stored away from sunlight and heat. The tin is sold on its own — ZOLA photographs it beside a brush, but no applicator ships in the box, so keep a pack of disposable spoolies next to it and give every client a fresh one.
