Lash Extension Removal: Safe Methods and Why DIY Is Dangerous

Last updated: September 2026 | Reading time: 5 minutes

Whether you want a break from extensions, need to switch styles, or have extensions from another studio that are causing problems — removal is a straightforward process when done professionally. What is not straightforward, and what I strongly advise against, is removing them yourself.

    Why DIY Removal Is Dangerous

Every week I see clients who attempted to remove extensions at home and damaged their natural lashes in the process. The most common DIY methods — and why they fail:

Pulling them off with fingers or tweezers. This rips out natural lashes along with the extensions. The adhesive is bonded to your natural lash, and no amount of gentle tugging separates them cleanly. The result is patchy, sparse natural lashes that take 6–8 weeks to regrow.

Using coconut oil or olive oil. Oil can weaken adhesive over time, but it does not dissolve it completely. You end up with partially detached extensions that are uncomfortable, look messy, and still require professional removal — plus now the oil has compromised the adhesive on the remaining lashes.

Steam. Prolonged steam exposure softens adhesive slightly, but again does not fully release the bond. It also puts your eyes at risk from heat exposure.

    How Professional Removal Works

Professional removal uses a cream or gel remover specifically formulated to dissolve cyanoacrylate adhesive. Here is the process:

I protect your lower lashes and skin with gel pads. A cream remover is applied carefully to the bonded area of each extension — not in your eye, not on your skin, only on the adhesive line. The remover sits for 5–10 minutes, gently dissolving the bond. Extensions slide off without any pulling, tugging, or force. Your lashes are cleaned and any remaining residue is removed. The entire process takes about 20 minutes.

Your natural lashes are left completely intact. There is no pain, no damage, and no drama.

When You Should Get Extensions Removed

You are experiencing an allergic reaction or persistent irritation. You want to take a break from extensions. You received a poor-quality set from another studio that is causing discomfort. You are switching to a completely different lash style and want a clean start. You are preparing for eye surgery or a medical procedure.

    Cost of Removal in Toronto

Professional removal typically costs $30–$50 as a standalone service. Many studios — including mine — offer free removal when booked with a new full set. This is a small investment compared to the cost of regrowing damaged natural lashes.

    After Removal: What to Expect

Your natural lashes will look shorter and sparser than you remember. This is not damage — this is simply the reality of your natural lashes without the enhancement. You have been seeing extended lashes for weeks or months, so the contrast feels dramatic.

If you had well-applied extensions and professional removal, your natural lashes should be in the same condition as before you started extensions. If there was any damage from a previous artist, a lash serum can support regrowth during a 6–8 week recovery period.

    FAQ

How long does professional removal take?

About 15–20 minutes. It is a quick, painless appointment.

Can I get new extensions immediately after removal?

Yes, if your natural lashes are healthy. Many clients book removal and a fresh set in the same appointment. I will assess your natural lashes after removal and let you know if they are ready for a new set.

Will my natural lashes be damaged after removal?

Not if removal is done professionally. If you removed them yourself or had poor-quality extensions, there may be some temporary thinning.
