What to Expect at Your First Lash Extension Appointment

What to Expect at Your First Lash Extension Appointment Last updated: May 2026 | Reading time: 4 minutes If you have never had lash extensions before, the unknown can feel intimidating. What does it feel like? Does it hurt? How long do you lie there? I want to walk you through exactly what happens so you feel confident walking in. Before Your Appointment Arrive with clean, makeup-free eyes. No mascara, no eyeliner, no eye cream. If you wear contacts, remove them before the appointment — you can put them back in after. Avoid caffeine right before your appointment if you tend to get jittery, as you will need to keep your eyes closed and still. Do not curl your lashes before coming in. I need to see your natural lashes in their relaxed state to choose the right extensions. What Happens During the Appointment You will lie down on a comfortable treatment bed with your eyes closed for the entire procedure. I place gel pads over your lower lashes to separate them from the upper lashes, then begin working one lash at a time. Does it hurt? No. You should feel absolutely nothing. Occasionally clients feel a slight sensation of something touching their lash line, but there is no pain. If you ever feel discomfort — even slight — tell me immediately. That is a sign something needs adjusting. How long does it take? A classic full set takes about 90 minutes. Hybrid is around 2 hours. Volume and mega volume can take 2–2.5 hours. Many clients fall asleep, which is perfectly fine and actually makes my job easier. Can you talk during the appointment? Yes, within reason. Light conversation is fine, but try to minimize facial movement. Laughing, sneezing, and animated expressions shift the lash line and make precision work harder. I will tell you if I need you to stay still for a tricky section. After the Appointment When I finish, I use a small fan to dry the adhesive. You open your eyes, and — this is my favorite part — see the result for the first time. Most first-time clients are genuinely amazed at how natural and comfortable extensions feel. Your lashes will feel different for the first day — you are aware of something on your eyelids that was not there before. This sensation fades completely within 24 hours. By the second day, most clients forget they even have extensions. I will give you aftercare instructions and answer any questions. The first 24 hours are the most important — keep your lashes dry and avoid steam, sweat, and rubbing your eyes. Tips for First-Timers Start with classic lashes if you are unsure about the look you want. They are the most natural-looking option and a great introduction to extensions. If you love them and want more volume, we can upgrade to hybrid or volume at your next appointment. Book your first fill appointment before you leave. The ideal timing is 2–3 weeks after your full set. FAQ What if I do not like how they look? We can remove them. Professional removal takes about 20 minutes and does not damage your natural lashes. However, this is very rare — the consultation before your appointment ensures we are aligned on the desired result. Can I still wear makeup with lash extensions? Yes, but avoid oil-based products near your eyes and skip waterproof mascara entirely. Most clients find they need significantly less eye makeup with extensions — many stop wearing mascara and eyeliner altogether. Will my eyes be red or irritated after? Slight redness immediately after is normal and fades within a few hours. Persistent redness, itching, or swelling is not normal and should be reported to your lash artist immediately.
