Top 5 Lash Extension Myths Debunked by a Professional

Top 5 Lash Extension Myths Debunked by a Professional Last updated: May 2026 | Reading time: 5 minutes After years of doing lash extensions in Toronto, I have heard every misconception imaginable. Some of these myths stop people from trying a service they would love. Others create unnecessary anxiety for current clients. Let me address the five biggest ones with facts. Myth 1: Lash Extensions Ruin Your Natural Lashes This is the most persistent myth, and I have written an entire blog post about it. The short version: properly applied extensions, with correct isolation and appropriate weight, do not damage your natural lashes. Damage comes from poor technique — specifically, lashes glued together (stickies), extensions that are too heavy for the natural lash, and improper removal. If your natural lashes are in worse condition after removing extensions, the issue was the application, not the extensions themselves. Choose your artist carefully. Myth 2: Lash Extensions Are Painful A properly done lash extension appointment should be completely painless. Many clients sleep through the entire procedure. If you feel any poking, pulling, or stinging during the application, something is wrong — either the gel pad is pressing against your eye, adhesive fumes are reaching your eye, or a lash is being pulled. Speak up immediately. Pain after the appointment — particularly a stabbing sensation when you blink — is a sign of a "sticky" where two or more natural lashes have been glued together. This needs to be fixed by your artist. Myth 3: You Cannot Get Lash Extensions Wet This was true decades ago with early adhesive formulations, but modern lash adhesives are waterproof once fully cured (24 hours after application). After that initial curing period, you can shower, swim, cry, and sweat without any issues. In fact, not cleaning your lash extensions is far worse than getting them wet. Daily cleansing with a proper lash cleanser is essential for retention and eye health. Dirty lashes lead to bacterial buildup, blepharitis, and poor retention. Myth 4: Lash Extensions All Look Fake and Dramatic This was perhaps true 10 years ago when the industry was less refined. Today, the range of available looks is enormous. Classic extensions with a natural map look exactly like your own lashes on a really good day. You can go as subtle or as dramatic as you want — the choice is entirely yours. When clients tell me they want lashes that "no one will know are extensions," I deliver exactly that. When they want full glamour, I deliver that too. Modern lash artistry is about customization, not one-size-fits-all drama. Myth 5: Lash Extensions Are High-Maintenance Compared to no lashes? Yes, there is some maintenance. But compared to a daily mascara routine — applying, hoping it does not smudge, removing it carefully every night — many clients find extensions are actually less daily effort. The maintenance involves: cleaning them daily (30 seconds), brushing them each morning (10 seconds), and getting fills every 2–3 weeks (1–1.5 hours). In exchange, you wake up every morning with perfect lashes. No makeup application, no removal, no raccoon eyes after a long day. The Real Thing to Watch Out For Instead of worrying about these myths, focus on the one thing that truly matters: the skill of your lash artist. A well-trained artist with proper technique will give you beautiful, safe, long-lasting extensions. An undertrained artist can cause real problems regardless of the quality of materials used. Ask to see their work. Ask about their training. Ask how they handle isolation. These questions matter far more than any myth circulating on social media. FAQ Do lash extensions feel heavy? No. Properly weighted extensions should feel like nothing at all. If your lashes feel heavy or your eyelids feel droopy, the extensions may be too thick or too long for your natural lashes. Can I wear mascara with lash extensions? You can, but most clients find they do not need to. If you want extra drama for a special occasion, use only water-based, extension-safe mascara on the tips — never at the base. How long have lash extensions been around? Modern lash extension techniques originated in the early 2000s in South Korea and Japan. The industry has advanced dramatically since then in terms of materials, adhesives, and techniques.
