Understanding when you need a fill versus a full new set can save you time and money while keeping your lashes looking their best. What Is a Fill? A fill appointment is a maintenance session where I remove any outgrown or twisted extensions, clean the lash line, and apply new extensions to the natural lashes that have grown in since your last appointment. It refreshes and restores your set without removing everything and starting over. What Is a New Set? A new set means removing all remaining extensions and applying a complete fresh set from scratch. It is essentially starting over. The 50% Rule The general guideline in the industry is: if you still have 50% or more of your extensions remaining, a fill is appropriate. If you have less than 50%, you need a new set. Why? Because filling a set that has lost most of its extensions takes just as long as doing a new set, but the result is often uneven because you are mixing old and new extensions at different stages of the growth cycle. Timing Your Fills For most clients, the ideal fill schedule is every 2–3 weeks. At the 2-week mark, you have typically lost 20–30% of your extensions through natural shedding. At 3 weeks, you have lost 40–50%. Beyond 3 weeks, you are likely in new-set territory. Clients who maintain a consistent 2-week fill schedule almost never need full new sets after their initial appointment. Their lashes always look fresh, and each fill appointment is shorter and less expensive than a new set. When to Choose a New Set You waited more than 4 weeks between appointments. You have less than 40% of extensions remaining. You want to change your lash style entirely (switching from classic to volume, for example). Your lashes feel tangled, sticky, or uncomfortable — this may indicate adhesive buildup that needs a complete reset. Cost Comparison A fill typically costs $65–$120, while a new full set costs $130–$350. Over a year, clients who maintain regular fills spend significantly less than clients who let their lashes fall out and get new sets every 2–3 months. FAQ What if I only have a few lashes left — can you still fill them? If retention is below 30–40%, I will recommend a new set. It is not cost-effective for you to pay fill pricing for what is essentially a full set worth of work, and the result will look better if we start fresh. How long does a fill appointment take? A 2-week fill typically takes 45–60 minutes. A 3-week fill takes 60–90 minutes. The more lashes that need replacement, the longer the appointment.
