If you are considering a career as a lash artist in Canada, choosing the right course is the single most important decision you will make — it shapes everything that follows. The training market in Toronto is enormous: dozens of academies, online courses, one-day masterclasses. How do you avoid a costly mistake?
I am a working lash artist and trainer, and I have taught dozens of lash technicians. This guide is an honest look from the inside at what actually matters when you pick a course.
What You Need to Know First
Ontario has no mandatory government licence for lash extensions. Technically, that means you could start working with no training at all. In practice, without a professional certificate you cannot get insurance — and without insurance you cannot work in salons — you cannot attract clients who care about safety, and you cannot work in a studio that respects itself.
Good training is an investment in your career, not a piece of paper.
What to Look For in a Course
Practice on live models. This is the decisive criterion. Online courses and mannequin work cannot replace working with real people. Isolation, handling adhesive, choosing a style — all of it needs practice on real eyes.
Group size. Four to six students is ideal. In a group of 15–20, the instructor physically cannot give each student enough attention or check their technique.
The curriculum. A good course covers theory (eye anatomy, lash types, safety), practice (isolation, adhesive work, building fans) and the business side (pricing, marketing, the legal basics).
Support after the course. The best schools do not disappear once the certificate is handed over. Mentorship, help with the problems that come up in your first months, and access to your trainer for questions all matter enormously.
Materials included. Ask whether materials are part of the price. A starter kit costs $300–$500. Good schools include a professional kit in the course fee.
What Training Costs in Toronto
Prices across the GTA vary:
Classic extensions (2–3 days): $800–$1,500. Volume extensions (2–3 days): $1,000–$2,000. Mega volume (1–2 days): $800–$1,500. Full programme (classic + volume + business): $2,000–$3,500.
If someone offers a complete course for $200–$400, ask yourself where the savings come from. Usually it is practice time, materials, and the qualifications of whoever is teaching.
Red Flags: When to Walk Away
The course runs for less than a full day. There is no work on live models. The group is larger than 8–10 people. The instructor is not a working lash artist. There is no clear curriculum, or it is vague. Promises that "you will earn $10,000 a month" with no explanation of how. No support after graduation.
How Training Works at My Academy
I teach in my own studio in North York, in groups of up to four. The course covers safety and technique theory, a demonstration on a live model, hands-on practice for every student on live models, a full professional kit of materials, a certificate on completion, and open-ended support after you graduate.
Training is available in English, Russian and Ukrainian. For many students, being taught in their first language is the deciding factor — technical terminology in an unfamiliar language becomes a real barrier to learning.
What Comes After the Course
The certificate is the beginning, not the end. Your first 50 sets are your real education. Work for free or at reduced rates on friends and family. Photograph every set. Build an Instagram portfolio. Raise your prices gradually as your skills grow.

Do I need English to train?
Not at my academy — I teach in English, Russian and Ukrainian. For working with English-speaking clients afterwards, conversational English will serve you well.
Can I train with no beauty-industry experience?
Yes. Most of my students start from zero, with no background in beauty. We begin with the fundamentals and build towards practice.
How soon after the course can I start working?
Formally, as soon as you have the certificate. Realistically, expect 2–3 months of steady practice before you feel confident with paying clients.
