The History of Russian Volume The technique originated in Russia in the early 2010s, developed by lash artists who wanted to create fuller looks than classic extensions could achieve. The innovation was the handmade fan — instead of applying one extension per natural lash, artists learned to create tiny fans of 2–6 ultra-fine extensions and apply each fan to a single natural lash. This technique spread globally and became the foundation of what we now call "volume lashes." When you see "Russian volume" on a menu, it specifically refers to the handmade fan technique. Handmade Fans vs Premade Fans This is the crucial distinction that separates true Russian volume from its shortcuts: Handmade fans are created by the artist in real time during your appointment.
